I've been looking forward to this week the whole series..... We're tackling the laundry room! This space is such an integral part of every day life, and when it's not working well it has a major affect on everything (I know I didn't need to tell you that, but I really need the reminder).
Laundry is one of those never-ending tasks, but with the right habits and systems in place, you can make it more efficient and (dare I say) maybe even enjoyable. This week, let’s streamline our laundry routines (i've got a few ideas), set up a space that works for us, and clear out the clutter.
Weekly Habit: Do a Load of Laundry Fully Every Day (or Follow a Routine That Works for You)
Laundry tends to pile up fast, and the more it piles up, the more overwhelming it feels. This week, commit to a habit that helps you stay on top of it, whatever that looks like for you.
Do a Load a Day: If this works for your lifestyle, commit to washing, drying, folding, and putting away one full load daily. The key here is finishing the load—it doesn’t count if it stays in the dryer or in a basket waiting to be folded! This is my goal for this week's challenge, and I'm going to try to work on that cue-habit-reward loop to get it to stick (more on this in my book The Home Reset).
Create a Laundry Routine That Works for You: If a daily load isn’t realistic, set a schedule that fits your family. Maybe it’s bedding on Monday and catch up on Saturday or designating specific laundry days for different family members.
Find what works and stick with it to keep the mountain of laundry from creeping up on you. I have a free Laundry Reset Printable with a schedule, laundry room reset, DIY stain removal, and a guide to read all those weird labels on your clothes. Click here or the picture below to get your copy!
Simple System: Streamline Your Laundry Space
A well-organized laundry space makes the whole process easier and more efficient. And no, it doesn’t have to be fancy or Pinterest-perfect—just functional and tailored to your needs! Here are a few ways to improve your space:
Use Bins or Hampers for Sorting: Have designated bins for lights, darks, and delicates to make sorting quick and easy. I really like using a laundry sorter on wheels, and have a few of my favorites saved for you here.
Wall Storage: Utilize wall-mounted shelves, cupboards, pegboards, or hanging rods to free up counter space and keep essentials within reach. If you have a front loader, you can utilize the space on top of the washer and dryer with a "counter top", or tray to hold laundry supplies.
Folding & Hanging Space: Creating a designated spot to fold laundry or hang delicates to dry can make your laundry room function well for you.
Label Everything: If multiple people do laundry in your household, labels on bins, detergent containers, or shelves can help keep things running smoothly.
Make It Pleasant: A fresh coat of paint, a fun sign, small plant, or even pretty detergent storage can make your laundry space feel more inviting!
Declutter Challenge: Laundry Supplies
Laundry rooms tend to accumulate random cleaning products, half-used detergent bottles, and things that don’t even belong there. Let’s clear it out!
Check Expiration Dates: Yes, detergents and stain removers do expire! Toss anything old or ineffective.
Only Keep What You Use: If you have five different stain removers but only use one, donate or discard the extras.
Minimize Bulk Packaging: If you buy detergent in bulk, consider transferring it into a more manageable container for daily use.
Ditch the Random Clutter: The laundry room often becomes a catch-all space—return any misplaced items to their rightful homes.
A well-functioning laundry space and routine can make such a difference in how smoothly your household runs. Let’s tackle it this week and lighten the load—literally!
