My daughter loves a good bedroom theme. Over the years I have always let her pick the "theme" of her bedroom and designed accordingly. Usually it is a challenge; my favorite was unicorn, Outer Space, Harry Potter Princess. She is encroaching on preteen years, and I can't help but hold on tight to any "magic" she still wants me to make for her, so I went all out on this room. Most days she is channeling her inner Jo March and Anne Shirley, carrying around books and notebooks in a satchel and reading and writing while sitting in trees. When she decided she wanted her room theme should be Little Women (a la Greta Gerwig), Anne of Green Gables, and Horses, I was ecstatic.

We just finished this bedroom in the remodel so had a blank slate to work with. It is a very oblong shape with a big bay window area, so we really had to think through where to place furniture to make the room make sense. My daughter knew she wanted a reading area, bookshelves, and fireplace. We found this wallpaper to base everything around, and because it was such a lovely neutral I decided to wallpaper EVERY wall.
One of my daughter's requests was that it would feel old fashioned but "not too old fashioned". I incorporated some more modern pieces of furntiure like this bed and bench with more "old fashioned" and whimsical decor like the ceiling light to get the look she was hoping.
I built the fireplace for my husband's office at our last house, and had painted it all black to match the room. To update it for this space, i painted it the same color as the trim (Sherwin Williams Natural Tan), and spray paitned the brick backing red. To match the "Little Women" feel, I used joint compound to make a schmear over the brick, and love how it turned out!
Creating a space that captured the essence of Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, and horses while blending timeless and modern elements was no small task, but the result is truly magical. This room is a reflection of my daughter's love for books, imagination, and adventure—a place where she can dream, read, and write. Watching her delight in the details and find comfort in her own cozy little space is a reminder of how quickly these years pass. I hope this room becomes a cherished space in her life and that it grows with her.
